Where we ponder the question Why Windows 7?

Why do we need so many different versions of Windows? Seriously! I have spoken to Microsoft several times about this and they insist that it comes down to profits. They claim that without the different versions they would not generate as much profits. But honestly I think they get more negative publicity and as a result lose sales just because of how ridiculous it is to have different versions.
While right now it is only speculation as to what editions are going to be available but it is widely believed that there will be 3 versions of Windows 7, Home Premium Edition, Professional Edition and Ultimate Edition.
Historically its only been Geeks that purchase Ultimate editions of operating systems but after Vista I sincerely doubt that there will be many purchasers of Windows 7 Ultimate. Can we please just go back to at most 2 versions of operating systems please?
Imran Hussain over at i think different has been playing around with how Windows 7 handles crashed applications. The primary change is that it instead of terminating the program and then restarting it, the OS identifies the crashed applications thread and then gives you the opportunity to only terminate that component. It’s interesting that Microsoft has taken so much time to integrate this feature in to the operating system seeing as there are so many third-party taskmanagers that have done this for years.
One of the most popular process managers that has done this for years is “Process Explorer” by Sysinternals which was acquired in 1996. Personally I was hoping that Microsoft would incorporate more features of the Sysinternals toolset into Windows 7.

Many well known journalists have been privileged to get their hands on the Windows 7 beta and are now starting to release some excellent screen shots as well as their opinions as to the stability and performance of Windows 7.

The madness has officially started.
Yesterday the first Windows 7 “Beta” was leaked to the internet via torrent sites. Previously to this there were many pre-beta versions available on the internet that have been cracked and the activation timers removed.
The Windows 7 beta release by Microsoft is considered to be the point at which the features of the operating system have been finalized and are simply being refined. The announcement for Windows 7 official release to its beta testers is expected to be given at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) which is scheduled for January 8-11 in Las Vegas.
The operating system is expected to be released for sale at the end of 2009. The release of the official beta is a strong indication that it will be able to meet that deadline.
